With inspiration to design promotion for the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival in 2020, this poster design came about to seamlessly integrate the two plays featured that year, As You Like It and King Lear. The solution used this dual promotion for both plays through illustration that flipped orientation with the poster as a whole, where viewers could see a different side of the festival, just as with the poster design.
Through researching the annual festival, my focus was to shine light on the specific year’s plays by Shakespeare. The parallel between the main characters of King Lear and Rosalind in As You Like It offered a unique opportunity to show their similarities and differences. The illustrations of the scenic forest Rosalind enters and the kingdom Lear divides were separately rendered and placed together like a puzzle: two stories written by the same author coming together.
Initial concepts drew from dialogue from major characters that spoke to the story along with a visual associated with theater, hence the stage and script. Overall, the best solution to depict the plays of that year involved using the illustrations.
